hi, i'm lao! a Qing Dynasty meat shaped rock who works as a researcher, scriptwriter and lead editor for a large history youtube channel. In my free time, I'm a hobbyist writer, gposer, roleplayer, and novice digital artist (don't ask to see my work unless you want to behold some poorly composed uncanny valley of my OCs.) My characters all reflect my background in history, and are heavily inspired by various historical societies, cultures and sub-cultures which I try to fit seamlessly into the FFXIV setting. I enjoy playing grounded, low-power characters and telling stories about every day people's struggles in a world full of hardship and injustice.

˖· Rule 001 ⸺ . Adults only.I am a 21+ player and require my partners to also be 21+ years of age.
˖· Rule 002 ⸺ . IC =/= OOC.Please maintain a separation of IC and OOC when interacting with Jonny Koban. His views and morality are not my own. Jonny Koban's actions are not meant to be celebrated. He is a narcissist, a criminal, a violent thug, and is not meant to be seen as admirable or aspirational in any way, shape or form.
˖· Rule 003 ⸺ . In conflict RP, be sensible and fair.Jonny Koban is a member of a large, lore-adjacent criminal syndicate made up of both background NPCs and other player characters. Please be aware that anyone seeking to start conflict with him will have to contend with this. With that said, neither Jonny Koban nor his criminal syndicate are invincible. When playing a villainous character, one must find a balance between being unfairly untouchable or letting hero characters walk over you like a doormat. I approach all conflict RP in the spirit of fairness, open mindedness and cooperation, and will expect others to do the same. ˖· Rule 004 ⸺ . No foreplay without loreplay. You will read my 12,000 word worldbuilding google doc before our characters fuck. In all seriousness, though, I am aware I play a sexually promiscuous, morally bankrupt villain character, and I am aware how that comes off to some people. I want to make clear that smut is not my main focus. My priority always will be telling compelling stories in culture-dense settings. Any sexual scenes I roleplay with a consenting rp partner must occur plausibly within the context of an ongoing narrative, rather than as an excuse to write pornography.
˖· Rule 005 ⸺ . Grounded Characters.I would prefer to RP with sensible, well-rounded characters; Characters who wouldn't look out of place among the NPCs of whichever nation they're from; characters who participate in society and have a job. I'm perfectly fine with characters with power and rank. I also love professional characters who are excellent at what they do. However, I draw the line at "rare case" characters whose premise relies on being one-in-a-million, characters with a shopping list worth of magical, demonic or cybernetic enhancements, and demigod-like characters who can personally beat up the warrior of light in a fistfight.
˖· Rule 006 ⸺ . Communicate! As a villain roleplayer, I believe strongly in open communication throughout the entire RP scene. I will routinely ask for your boundaries, limitations and preferences when RPing darker themes, so nothing will come at you out of left field. however, I strongly implore you to be vocal if, despite that, something occurs during the course of our RP which makes you uncomfortable. I can actually be somewhat nervous about overstepping myself when playing this trashfire of a Cantonese fuckboy, and having an RP partner who is open and transparent with me helps me a lot.
˖· Rule 007 ⸺ . No overly "modern" characters.I do not want RP anything adjacent to smartphones, tablets, social media, and modern streetwear like hoodies, sneakers, et cetera. I will not interact with anything related to Alexandria / Solution 9, or anything related to cosmic exploration and space travel. However, I am okay with Garlean magitek, as I don't see it as too aesthetically close to modern 21st century technology and fashion, and believe it to be better integrated into the lore.

APPEARANCE Teng Sim's features are typical of a bun deih yahn from the humid south of Yanxia, possessing a lithe frame, sun-dark skin and straight black hair. What he lacks in bulk, he makes up for in stamina, possessing a lean, tough and sinewy strength.vulgar scars criss-cross their way down his body, writing his history of thuggish violence upon his flesh. It is, according to Jonny Koban, the best language in the world to seduce a leng neoi, a beautiful woman, and also the best language to tell a dogmeat bastard to fuck his ancient grandmother in the fourth level of hell.Jonny Koban doesn't swear like a sailor, sailors swear like Jonny Koban. Diu lei lo mo is practically a verbal tick. Any lou faan fortunate enough to endure the gangster's company is likely to receive a thorough and highly colloquial vocabulary lesson in the local lingo.
RP Hooks ⸺
˖· Hook 001 ⸺ . The Tin Dei Wui / 天地會Are you from the East? You may have heard of The Heaven and Earth Benevolence Society [Tin Dei Wui / 天地會], a sworn brotherhood of secret freemasons founded immediately after the Garlean conquest of Doma, dedicated to undermining the Imperial oppressors from the shadows. After the liberation, the society went public and rebranded itself as a mutual aid organization which provided support for the poor. Although the Tin Dei Wui is widely admired throughout Yanxia for their commendable charity, there are whispers that they never gave up their freemason roots, and have since spread their tendrils into the world of drugs, smuggling, gambling, prostitution and extortion. ˖· Hook 002 ⸺ . An Unpaid Debt.Do you owe the Triad money? If you're from Yanxia, perhaps you've received financial aid from the Heaven and Earth Benevolence Society. Or maybe you're a lou faan, a westerner, who was denied a loan by every respectable bank in Ul'dah until the only option open to them was an oriental debtshark in a corner office in Little Doma... However you came to owe the Triad money, the Triad always comes to collect. Don't have the chop? Don't want to pay up? Houh laa! Jonny Koban loves a good shakedown.
˖· Hook 003 ⸺ . Silver grows like rice paddy.Inversely, is your business struggling? Your noble family fallen on hard times? The Heaven and Earth Benevolence Society believes in ensuring that everyone is given an opportunity to succeed. The Doman Freemasons are generous with their silver bullion, so long as you don't mind them sticking around to ensure a return on their investment...
˖· Hook 004 ⸺ . Saw Something They shouldn't...Did you see something you shouldn't? Wander down the wrong alley at the wrong time? Eavesdrop on the wrong conversation? The Heaven and Earth Benevolence Society prides itself on discretion. If you know something you shouldn't, then the Triad will send its people to courteously remind you of the value of that discretion.
˖· Hook 005 ⸺ . Partners in Crime. Are you a merchant or politician involved in, shall we say, paralegal enterprises? Do you have a rival you want out of the picture? are you looking for a native partner to help you expand your business into the east? Or are you looking to get your hands on a supply of baahk siu je: "Miss White"? The Tin Dei Wui are self-styled Doman Patriots before all, but that doesn't stop them from selling their product to anyone with the cold, hard silver to buy, or forging pragmatic alliances with the lou faan if it serves their own ends.
˖· Hook 006 ⸺ . Investigating a crime. Are you an enforcer of the law? An oily-mouthed, motherless turtle's egg abortion of a puk gaai police officer? Perhaps you're a Samurai magistrate from the Doman Enclave come to investigate the corruption in the southern Kwan Tei province. Or perhaps you're foreign; a Hingan Samurai, Ishgardian Knight or other such lou faan authority come to southern Doma to investigate the dissapearance of one of your citizens who went missing on the streets of Wansui, or to investigate the source of the somnus flooding into your country. Such officials are not welcome, and the Triad will make sure they know it...
The Bonds ⸺
| Name | Relationship | Story |
|---|---|---|
| Mung Mui | Wife | Born as Badamlyankhua Qestir, this lissome Xaela woman was taken as a concubine by several Garlean officers before being aggressively acquired by Teng Sim. Initially treated as a plaything, she rose in the highbinder's confidence and affections to become his wife. Since then, she has taken on the Doman name Mung Mui, the lady of dreams. Her children by her previous masters have been adopted by Teng Sim, and she has borne Teng Sim his first biological son: the four-year-old Teng Keng. More than a pretty trophy, Mung Mui has become instrumental to her husband's success, managing the financial side of her husband's business interests and reigning in his worst impulses. She turns a blind eye to Teng Sim's womanizing habits, so long as she retains mastery of the Red Pole's assets and heart. |
| the highbinders | sworn brothers | The Hardened criminals of the Tin Dei Wui include such scoundrels as Firecracker Ri, Silver Tip lou, Blossom Boy Tou and Horsefucker Goro. These boys are not just Teng Sim's comrades, but his sworn brothers, bound by 36 oaths to love and protect one another as if they were kin, and promised a swift death by five thunderbolts and a whirlwind of swords if they fail to do so. Cast out by his birth clan, Teng Sim considers his brothers to be true family, and for all his many, many faults, his loyalty to them is genuine. |
| Mou Waiman | Sworn Brother | The custodian of Wuchang Temple, Mou Waiman is a Daoist monk and a gangster in equal measure. Known to his sworn brothers as "Flowery Monk Mou," Waiman stands in stark contrast to his daai lo Teng Sim, living a strict religious lifestyle of abstinence, moderation and asceticism in opposition to Teng Sim's highrolling hedonism. In spite of, or perhaps because of their polar opposite personalities, Mou Waiman has become one of Teng Sim's most trusted right hand men, and a valuable source of wisdom and tempering advice (even if he ignores most of it). |
| Teng Ui | biological brother | The youngest son of the Seaborne Tengs, Teng Ui shares the same biological father as Teng Sim, to whom they are both estranged. Having both emancipated themselves from their megalomaniacal father and so alienated themselves from the rest of the Teng clan, Ui and Sim are keenly aware that they're the last biological family the other has left. Nevertheless, their personalities could not be further apart. Like Mou Waiman, Teng Ui chose the path of a temple monk, but unlike "Flowery Monk" Mou, Teng Ui possesses a bleeding heart and naive sense of moral virtue which Teng Sim has been trying, in frustrating vain, to help his little brother grow out of. |
| Ciah Faamau | It's...complicated | A Keeper of the Moon from the black shroud, Ciah Faamau is the unlikeliest member of Teng Sim's inner circle. A former poacher of the Coeurlclaw Clan, Ciah was branded a wanted criminal by the city-state of Gridania and forced to flee her homeland. The tides of fate eventually blew her onto the far shores of the Kwan Tei, where, despite their backwards attitudes towards women and non-Domans, she managed to integrate herself into the Teng Sim's street gang. Affectionately called a "sworn brother" despite being a woman, Ciah drinks with the triad boys, fights with the triad boys, and holds her own among them. To say that Ciah and Teng Sim have clashing personalities would be an understatement, with the two trying to claw each other's throats out more often than not. Despite that, they trust one another with their lives. |
| Noa Ishiku | whisperer | A viper of the Kugane underworld, Lady Ishiku is a Hingan information broker who blends highborn sophistication with clandestine ruthlessness in her transactions. Respected by the Tin Dei Wui for the utmost discretion with which she conducts her business, Lady Ishiku has long been one of the Doman Triad's primary liaisons on the other side the Ruby Sea. From her indispensable support in everything from contraband arms shipments to real estate fraud, much of Teng Sim's ill-begotten wealth can be traced back to the Hingan serpent's talent for subterfuge. |
| Omako Mibu | mama-san | The estates manager of her husband's Hingan merchant house, Lady Mibu is the proprietor of a number of teahouses and brothels on both sides of the Ruby Sea. In the Triad-dominated town of Wansui, her domain is the Lily of the Other Shore, a decadent pocket of the Hingan floating world nestled into the heart of the red light district of Southern Doma. Like every business owner on the Wansui Bund, Mibu-sama pays her dues to the benevolence society, and the popularity of her brothel has seen her emerge as one of the Triad's top earners. |
| Gan Mheng | seaborne ally | A pirate of the Ruby Sea, Captain Gan is one of the Tin Dei Wui Triad's primary allies at sea. The commander of the squadron of Doman War Junks, Mheng's flagship is the Nine Bells, named for the titular bells hung from its hull, whose ringing is said to banish the evil spirits of the sea. Although not a sworn brother of the Triads, Mheng has fought in many scraps by Teng Sim's side, and for that has the highbinder's friendship and respect. |
| Bai Yuerong | courtesan spy | A painted flowergirl of the Jade Hairpin Teahouse, Bai Yuerong is one of hundreds of prostitutes in Wansui, and may have gone completely unnoticed by Teng Sim had she not attempted to pickpocket him on the street. Defiant even after being subdued and confronted, Teng Sim saw a potential asset in the lowly flowergirl, compelling her to serve as a spy in the beds of his enemies and potential victims. In return for this dangerous, clandestine service, Teng Sim has promised to eventually fulfill Yuerong's dreams by turning her into a star of the stage. It is for her to determine how much the gangster's promises are worth. |
| Lucilla Albinus | concubine | The daughter of a former Garlean colonial officer, Lucilla bas Albinus was raised in Doma during the nation's Garlean occupation, growing accustomed to the Doman culture and language through exposure to the local people and the household staff. Forced into hiding after the Empire retreated from Doma, she was eventually discovered by Teng Sim, who seized on the opportunity to possess an exotic foreign beauty, and subsequently made her into a gangster's mistress. Lucilla has since become fully immersed in the decadent eastern underworld her master moves in, becoming more Doman and less Garlean with each passing night. Titled First Concubine, she is the longest "tenured" of Teng Sim's kept women, and second in hierarchy only to his wife. |
| Yu Miaoyi | concubine | a well-bred lady of the educated gentry, Miaoyi was born into the Great House of Yu, a family of old Doman gentry fallen on hard times. Facing financial ruin, the Patriarch of Yu was forced to sell his daughter's youth and virtue to the underworld, betrothing her first to an Honoured Uncle of the Qing Bang triad and, after a minor kidnapping incident, to Teng Sim of the Tin Dei Wui. Miaoyi is Teng Sim's window into the courtly rituals and scholarly dignity of the Doman nobility. As a barely literate peasant, Teng Sim is often made to feel inferior due to Miaoyi's sophistication and advanced education, something which he takes out on her. Miaoyi, however, is not defenseless against Teng Sim, possessing ancient magics inherited from her mother which he has only barely begun to understand. |
| Liu Yanmu | concubine | a robust peasant girl from a rural countryside, Liu Yanmu first met Teng Sim in a floating brothel, where, masquerading as one of the flowergirls, she made an attempt to kill him over the Triad's exploitation of her family. Unfortunately, the gangster's reflexes were quicker by the beat of a dragonfly's wings. Rather than summarily execute his would-be killer, Teng Sim was instead drawn to the exciting novelty of a lowly peasant girl so fearless as to attempt an assassination on a high-profile gangster. Initially taken in as a footservant in Teng Sim's household, Yanmu's hatred for her captor abated over time, with Teng Sim taking notice of her ability to turn ten silver taels into a hundred at any mahjong table. Elevating her to a junior concubine, Yanmu now works as a hostess at the Triad-owned Lucky Kirin Casino, where she utilizes her talents to ensure the house always wins. |
| Mhimi Lanpoh | concubine | The final and most enigmatic of Teng Sim's kept women, Mhimi Lanpoh is an exotic bird in a cage. Another Keeper of the Moon who the tides of fate washed onto the shores of Doma to be swept into the wealthy mobster's home to be kept on display as a foreign curiosity. Strangely, Mhimi has accepted her captivity with complete placidity. Often muted, dream-like and docile to a fault, there is more to her than meets the eye, if her chauvinistic master would ever care to find out. |
